Trauma and the Nervous System: Why You React the Way You Do

Trauma can shape how your nervous system responds to the world. Even when you logically know you’re safe, your body may react as if danger is still present. This can look like hypervigilance, shutdown, panic, or feeling “too much” or “not enough.”
I take a collaborative, exploratory approach to trauma therapy. We work to understand your responses, build safety and stability, and gently process what’s been carried—without rushing.
Trauma responses are not character flaws
Many trauma responses began as intelligent survival strategies. Therapy can help you honor how you got through, while also creating new ways to live now.
Trauma can show up as
Feeling on edge, easily startled, or constantly alert
Avoidance, emotional numbing, or disconnection
Intrusive memories or nightmares
Difficulty trusting others or feeling safe in relationships
Strong shame, self-blame, or feeling “broken”
If you want support
If you’re looking for trauma therapy in Guelph or online across Ontario, I’m here to help. You can contact me to ask questions and see whether working together feels right.
